Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward strengthening urban healthcare services, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Hospital on Tuesday inaugurated a dedicated Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Department. The new facility aims to offer timely consultations, diagnostic services, and basic treatment for cancer patients every Tuesday.
The department was formally inaugurated by Mayor Sulochana Das, who attended as the chief guest. Among other dignitaries present were Additional Commissioner Shubhendu Kumar Sahu, local Corporator Chandrasekhar Mallia, BMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Siddharth Shankar Ray, the Head of the Cancer Department, and several medical and support staff.
Under the new initiative, five doctors from various specialities will be available every Tuesday from 9 AM to 1 PM to attend to cancer patients. This marks a major improvement over the earlier arrangement, where cancer services were provided in collaboration with Panda Curie, and only one doctor was available for consultations. With the expiration of that contract, BMC has now brought the services in-house, ensuring better accessibility and multidisciplinary support.
In addition to the cancer care facility, a sterilization machine donated by the State Bank of India (SBI) was also inaugurated. The machine will play a crucial role in sterilizing all surgical equipment used at the hospital, enhancing safety and hygiene standards.
The launch of the new department aligns with BMC’s broader goal of improving public health infrastructure and making specialized care more accessible to citizens.
