BMC Inaugurates 2 Sewage Treatment Plants In Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In a major step towards strengthening urban sanitation and promoting sustainable wastewater management, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday inaugurated two Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at public toilet complexes near Bhubaneswar Master Canteen Railway Station and Jaydev Vihar Square.

Each plant has a treatment capacity of 40 kilolitres per day (KLD) and has been installed to process wastewater generated from the public toilet facilities. The treated water will be disinfected, rendered free from harmful bacteria, and reused for horticulture and other approved non-potable purposes, reducing environmental pollution and conserving water resources.

The STPs were commissioned after the successful completion of trial and operational runs.

At the inauguration ceremony held near the Master Canteen Railway Station, Bhubaneswar (Central) MLA Ananta Narayan Jena attended as the chief guest. Mayor Sulochana Das, Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar, corporators, and senior officials of the BMC were present on the occasion.

At the Jaydev Vihar facility, Bhubaneswar North MLA Susant Kumar Rout inaugurated the STP as the chief guest in the presence of Mayor Sulochana Das, Deputy Mayor Manjulata Kanhar, local corporators, senior BMC officials, employees, and residents.

Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Das said the initiative would help reduce environmental pollution while ensuring the effective reuse of treated wastewater. She added that the project reflects the civic body’s commitment to adopting environmentally sustainable practices and improving public sanitation infrastructure across the city.

According to BMC officials, the newly commissioned STPs will strengthen sanitation facilities in busy public areas, particularly around transport hubs, while ensuring that wastewater from public toilets is scientifically treated before reuse or safe disposal.

The project forms part of BMC’s ongoing efforts to modernise civic infrastructure, improve urban hygiene, and promote sustainable water management in the state capital.
