Koraput (Jayapur): Police on Sunday foiled an alleged cattle smuggling attempt and arrested eight persons while rescuing 15 cattle from Chilli Shankha village under Laxmipur police station limits in Koraput district.
The arrested persons have been identified as Bidesh Khara, Bisekha Khara, Pan Kuldeep, Uday Patra, Ishwar Khara, Jag Kulesika, Lenku Habika, and Baachu Hikka, all residents under the Narayanpatna police station limits.
According to police, the cattle were allegedly being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh via the Laxmipur route every Saturday. Acting on intelligence inputs and during routine night patrolling, police intercepted the group near Chilli Shankha village and rescued the cattle.
The rescued animals were first brought to the Laxmipur police station premises and later shifted to a cow shelter in Jayapur, informed IIC Sugyani Sahu.
A case has been registered at the Laxmipur police station under Case No. 100/26, and investigation is underway to ascertain further links in the alleged smuggling network.
