Bhubaneswar: Rainwater mixed with mud entered an under-construction railway tunnel near Adenigarh village in Odisha’s Boudh district following heavy rainfall on Saturday and Sunday.
The tunnel is part of the Dasapalla–Purunakatak section of the Khordha–Balangir new railway line.
According to the East Coast Railway (ECoR), continuous heavy rainfall over the past 30 hours led to water ingress at the Khordha end of Tunnel-4 near Adenigarh village. The rainwater has been flowing through the tunnel’s side drains and is being safely discharged.
“The water ingress is primarily due to inundation of the surrounding cultivated land, causing runoff towards the tunnel portal. There has been no damage to manpower or machinery,” ECoR said in a statement.
The repair work will be taken up once the rainfall subsides and conditions become suitable for restoration work.
Rainwater and mud accumulation led to slush formation at the construction site, temporarily affecting the movement of materials and equipment. The tunnel, located in a hilly and forested terrain in Boudh district near the borders of Nayagarh and Kandhamal, has been designed with openings for the movement of heavy machinery, through which water also entered during the rainfall.
