Bhubaneswar: A portion of the ceiling suddenly reportedly collapsed at the maternity ward of Udala Hospital in Mayurbhanj district, creating panic among patients and their attendants. Fortunately, a new mother and her newborn baby escaped serious injury.
The incident occurred when a section of the ceiling fell from the roof and landed on the back of a woman, who was sitting on a bed holding her newborn child. Both the mother and the infant remained largely unhurt, according to reports.
On the other hand, the sudden collapse triggered panic at the ward for some time. Other patients and their attendants were also left frightened by the incident.
The incident has once again raised serious questions about the safety of infrastructure and patient security in the government hospital. Demands have grown for a thorough inspection of the hospital’s old buildings and for necessary maintenance work.
Although the mother and her newborn were safe this time, such negligence could lead to a major tragedy in the future.
