Centre’s GI Push Puts Kendrapada Rasabali In Spotlight

Kendrapada Rasabali

Bhubaneswar: Kendrapada Rasabali, Odisha’s iconic GI-tagged sweet, has found a place in the Centre’s ambitious plan to strengthen India’s Geographical Indication (GI) ecosystem, with the Union government setting a target of 10,000 GI registrations by 2030 to boost exports and promote traditional products in global markets.

In a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release issued on Tuesday, the Centre highlighted Kendrapada Rasabali among India’s recognised GI-tagged food products, alongside West Bengal’s Bardhaman Mihidana and Sitabhog, and Andhra Pradesh’s Tirupati Laddu.

The government said it is rolling out a slew of measures to expand the reach of GI products through export facilitation, tourism promotion, financial support and dedicated marketing platforms. The initiatives are aimed at improving market access for artisans, farmers and producer groups while safeguarding India’s traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.

India now has more than 800 registered GI products, including 607 registrations granted since 2014. To encourage more applications, the Centre has reduced GI application fees by 80% and lowered the renewal fee from Rs 3,000 to Rs 500 under the amended Geographical Indications Rules, 2025.

The government is also banking on initiatives such as PM Ekta Mall, One Station One Product (OSOP), APEDA’s export promotion programmes and GI tourism trails to increase the visibility of GI-certified products in both domestic and international markets.

The broader objective is to transform India’s traditional products into globally recognised brands while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities and preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage.
