Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of World Elephant Day, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged people to come together to protect elephants, conserve their natural habitats, and strengthen human-elephant coexistence.
In a post shared on his X handle, the Chief Minister described the elephant as a unique symbol of Odisha’s natural environment, rich biodiversity, and glorious cultural heritage. He underlined the deep connection between the majestic animal — often referred to as Gajaraj — and the state’s identity.
Highlighting the cultural significance of elephants in Odisha, CM Majhi noted that from the elephants associated with Lord Jagannath to the intricate temple architecture of Puri and the state’s rich historical traditions, Gajaraj has remained an integral part of Odisha’s cultural fabric for centuries.
Calling for collective action on World Elephant Day, the Chief Minister said people must resolve to protect elephants, ensure their conservation, and secure a safe future for their natural habitats.
He appealed to citizens from all sections of society to work towards reducing conflict between humans and elephants and to safeguard this ‘glorious treasure of nature’.
World Elephant Day is observed every year on August 12 to raise awareness about the urgent need to protect elephants, which face threats from habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and other challenges.
Odisha, home to a significant elephant population and several important elephant corridors, has long emphasised the need for balanced conservation efforts that protect both wildlife and the livelihoods of people living near forest areas.
