Bhubaneswar: In a significant breakthrough, the Commissionerate Police in Bhubaneswar on Saturday revealed shocking details about a massive SIM box scam involving a Bangladeshi national.
At a press conference, Twin City Police Commissioner Sanjeeb Panda disclosed that the mastermind behind the operation was Asadur Jaman, a Bangladesh national. Jaman was the handler accused Raju Mandal who was arrested in connection with the scam.
During a raid on a house in Bhubaneswar on Friday, a special team of the Commissionerate Police seized seven SIM boxes from a house at Mahadevnagar under Laxmisagar police limits of Bhubaneswar UPD. Approximately 1000 pre-activated SIM cards from West Bengal, old SIM cards, routers, and other equipment were seized during the raid.
“The investigation has exposed a complex network of illegal SIM card trade, with international links. The police are likely to probe further into the involvement of other individuals and organizations in the scam,” maintained Panda.
According to Commissioner Panda, Jaman had entered India in October through Agartala and also visited Bhubaneswar before returning to Bangladesh in December. During his stay in Odisha, Jaman resided at a hotel in Bhubaneswar and set up two additional SIM boxes, which are currently being investigated. Commissioner Panda assured that necessary measures will be taken to dismantle these operations.
“It is learnt from investigation that the SIM boxes were smuggled into India from Bangladesh through clandestine means. Furthermore, it was discovered that Jaman was responsible for making payments to Mandal, highlighting the extent of their involvement in the scam,” added Panda.
