Bhubaneswar: Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das on Sunday alleged that a systematic attempt was underway to marginalise the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and undermine the values enshrined in the Constitution.
Speaking at a programme organised to mark the 140th Foundation Day of the Indian National Congress, Das, without naming any individual or organisation, said that while several former prime ministers had upheld Gandhian ideals, the present times posed serious challenges to democracy. He claimed that there was a growing conspiracy to erase Mahatma Gandhi’s name and principles from public life.
The OPCC chief asserted that the Congress, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, would resist such attempts and continue its struggle for constitutional values and people’s rights. He urged party leaders and workers to remain united and strengthen the organisation.
“At a time when the country is facing grave democratic challenges, Congress continues to stand as the voice of the people,” Das said.
Paying tribute to party workers, he said the Congress has survived and remained relevant due to their courage, sacrifices and commitment. He also remembered the freedom fighters who built the party and led India to Independence.
Founded in 1885, Das said, the Congress played a pivotal role in shaping India’s democracy and Constitution. “Today, when these values are under threat, we reaffirm our resolve to stand with the people and continue the fight for justice and democracy,” he added.
Das reiterated that the Congress remains committed to safeguarding the interests of Odisha. He expressed serious concern over women’s safety in the state and launched a sharp attack on the BJP governments at both the state and Centre.
“Odisha’s ‘Asmita’ (pride) is being dishonoured under BJP rule,” he alleged.
The state Congress president also criticised the BJP over the Mahanadi river water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh, and raised concerns about farmers’ issues. He claimed that paddy procurement was not being conducted as smoothly as projected by the state government.
Calling for a united struggle, Das appealed to Congress leaders and workers to fight decisively to protect Odisha’s rights and interests.
