Baripada (Mayurbhanj): A 45-year-old police constable was found dead inside a parked car along National Highway-18 near Padmanavapur Chowk under the jurisdiction of Baisinga police station in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Basanta Mohanta, a native of Jharpokharia. He joined the Odisha Police in 2002 and was serving as a constable at Baisinga police station.
According to police, the red car had been parked by the roadside since around 11 a.m. As the vehicle remained stationary for several hours, it attracted the attention of passers-by. In the afternoon, locals approached the car and found Mohanta lying motionless in the driver’s seat. They immediately alerted the police.
A team from Baisinga police station rushed to the spot and launched an investigation. After confirming his identity, police shifted the body to the Baisinga Primary Health Centre (PHC). Family members, along with officers and staff from the police station, later arrived at the hospital.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating all possible angles. The exact cause of death will be determined after the postmortem examination.
Baisinga Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) Barini Das said the postmortem report would ascertain the cause of death and that further investigation is underway.
