Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a Depression has formed over coastal West Bengal and adjoining areas of Bangladesh and the northwest Bay of Bengal as of 5:30 am on Monday.

According to the IMD, yesterday’s well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining West Bengal–north Odisha coasts moved nearly northwestwards and intensified into a depression. It was centred near latitude 22.5°N and longitude 88.3°E, close to Kolkata.

The system is located approximately 80 km west-southwest of Satkhira in Bangladesh, 160 km southeast of Bankura in West Bengal, and 180 km northeast of Baleshwar in Odisha.

The Depression is very likely to move northwestwards towards Jharkhand across Gangetic West Bengal during the next 24 hours.

Under its influence, Balehwar district in Odisha has already recorded 93.1 mm of rainfall up to 5:30 am today.

Authorities in the affected regions have been advised to remain vigilant as the system progresses inland.
