Bhubaneswar: Tension prevailed at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital in Bolangir following the death of a patient due to alleged medical negligence.
The relatives of the deceased allegedly thrashed the duty doctor heavily alleging that he was heavily drunk and didn’t attend to the patient.
“We admitted him in the evening. The rounding doctors attended to him and prescribed some medicines. Later, no doctor came to him till 11 pm even as his health condition deteriorated. The doctor in question came after 11 pm in an inebriated condition,” said Khristadatta Nag, a relative of the deceased.
“When I asked why he came late, he replied that he was on duty inside ICU. The doctor was in an inebriated condition and argued with us as we asked him the reason for not attending our patient for three hours, ” Nag added.
Niku Barik of Kandhapalipada in Bolangir town fell ill on Monday and was admitted to hospital in a critical condition. He had severe abdominal pain with liver ailment.
Though he was admitted in the evening doctors and nurses didn’t treat him properly on time which led to his death, kin alleged.
Meanwhile, the hospital superintendent Manasi Panda ordered a probe into the allegations. A ten-member team of doctors will investigate the allegation. If the allegations are proven, action will be taken against the erring doctor, the superintendent said.
