Bhubaneswar: East Coast Railway has recorded significant progress across multiple operational areas during the financial year 2025–26, with marked improvements in infrastructure, safety, speed enhancement and passenger amenities.
In a major boost to passenger experience, the railway zone completed concrete surfacing on 73 platforms and constructed 69 high-level platforms to facilitate safer and more convenient boarding. Shelter extensions were carried out at 38 stations, while more than 1,073 benches were installed to improve passenger comfort. Additionally, 20 new Foot Over Bridges were commissioned to streamline passenger movement, alongside modernisation of circulating areas and waiting halls at several stations. Four stations were also redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
Focusing on inclusivity, the zone upgraded 41 stations with Divyang-friendly infrastructure, including ramps, tactile pathways and accessible toilets, ensuring improved accessibility for passengers with disabilities.
Operational efficiency saw notable gains with track upgrades enabling train speeds of up to 130 kmph over 236 km and 110 kmph over 266 km. Loop line speeds were enhanced at nine stations, while 22 permanent speed restrictions were removed, contributing to smoother and more reliable services.
Safety measures remained a priority, with Ultrasonic Flaw Detection testing conducted over 28,146 track kilometres. Extensive track renewal works covered 390 km of rails, 567 km of sleepers and 544 km of fastenings. The zone also undertook rehabilitation of 239 bridges and strengthened 64 bridge approaches.
On the staff welfare front, 103 staff quarters were constructed and Periodical Medical Examinations were conducted for 1,354 employees. Sustainability initiatives included installation of rainwater harvesting systems at 65 locations. Scrap disposal crossed 39,000 metric tonnes, while land management revenue reached Rs. 67.30 crore, surpassing the annual target.
The performance of East Coast Railway during 2025–26 highlights a balanced focus on infrastructure development, safety and passenger-centric initiatives, reinforcing its contribution to the broader growth and modernisation of Indian Railways.
