Bhubaneswar: As a mark of respect and gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Odisha government has decided to plant 75 lakh trees across the state on his birthday on September 17. This initiative is part of the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, which aims to promote environmental conservation and tree plantation.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced this plan during a preparation session at Lok Seva Bhawan while emphasising that this campaign has become a people’s movement. The state government aims to plant at least 7.5 crore trees under this programme in its second edition, which started on June 5 and will continue till September 3.
Last year, Odisha exceeded its target and became the fourth largest tree planter in the country by planting 6.88 crore trees. This year, the target has been set to plant 7.5 crore trees, with 75 lakh trees being planted in just one day on PM Modi’s birthday. The Chief Minister said that this will be a record.
The Forest Department and Agriculture, and Farmer Empowerment Department will play a major role in the campaign. The Chief Minister emphasised the need for proper maintenance and care of the planted trees and suggested that the campaign should not just be a program, but a mass movement for environmental protection.
The government will involve PSUs, NGOs, youth unions, and various government departments in the initiative. Panchayat institutions, schools, colleges, and self-help groups will also play a crucial role. The Information and Public Relations Department will conduct wide publicity programs for the campaign.
The Chief Minister advised uploading photos and data of the trees on the Meri Life portal and providing rewards for good performance. Panchayat officials in rural areas will expedite the tree plantation program and take care of it. The initiative aims not only to plant trees but also to ensure their nurturing and maintenance.
