Baripada: In a tragic incident, Paresh Chandra Mahant (65), a resident of Kaduani village under Bahalda police station in Mayurbhanj district, lost his life after being struck by lightning while working in his paddy field on Friday afternoon.
According to sources, Paresh was engaged in fieldwork when a sudden lightning strike hit him, causing him to collapse on the spot. Family members, who were alerted soon after, rushed him to the Rairangpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Bahalda police have registered a case of unnatural death and conducted a post-mortem examination. Following the procedure, the body was handed over to the bereaved family.
This is the third lightning-related death reported in the area within just three days, after two farmers died earlier in similar incidents. The back-to-back fatalities have created widespread fear and concern among local residents, especially those dependent on agricultural work during the monsoon season.
Local authorities have urged people to remain vigilant and take shelter during thunderstorms, as lightning-related incidents continue to pose a serious risk in the region.
