Bhubaneswar: Distinguished writer and translator Sukhendu Mohan Das passed away at his residence in Bhubaneswar on Monday. He was 96.
Das had been residing with his family in the historic Old Town area of Bhubaneswar. A prolific literary figure, he was widely acclaimed for translating several notable works between Odia and Bengali, fostering cultural and linguistic exchange between the two languages.
He rose to prominence with his Bengali adaptation of Ghardiha, a celebrated novel by renowned Odia author Nityananda Mahapatra. In addition to his translation work, Das authored ten books, including Ramayana Katha, Mahabharata Katha, and Rabindra Kabita Varaha, among others.
His final rites were conducted at Swargadwar in Puri on Monday evening.
The passing of Sukhendu Mohan Das marks the end of an era in Odisha’s literary landscape.
