Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a retired Odisha government engineer to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) in a disproportionate assets case.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the accused, identified as Kalayanipuri Gandhi Chaudhury, former Executive Engineer of the Hydro Electric Project Investigation Division, Jayapur in Koraput district.

According to an official press release, Chaudhury was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(e) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 109 of the IPC, for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

After examining the evidence, the Special Judge, Special Court (Vigilance), Bhubaneswar, held him guilty and pronounced the sentence of three years of RI along with the monetary penalty.

Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance is expected to move the competent authority for initiation of proceedings to stop the pension benefits of the retired engineer.

Further legal formalities are underway.
