Bhubaneswar: A woman was arrested by the Maitree Vihar Police in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday for allegedly cheating several job seekers of nearly ₹25 lakh by falsely promising them government jobs.
According to police, the accused operated through a consultancy and claimed that she could secure appointments in the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for aspiring candidates in exchange for money. She allegedly collected large sums from multiple individuals, most of them from Rayagada district, by assuring them of government employment.
Police said the accused reportedly demanded around ₹5 lakh from each candidate, claiming to have influential contacts that could help them obtain government jobs. The fraud came to light after information surfaced that interviews for the purported recruitment process were being conducted at a star hotel in Bhubaneswar.
Following complaints lodged by the victims, Maitree Vihar Police launched an investigation and arrested the woman. Police suspect that more people may have been cheated and are examining whether others were involved in the alleged racket.
Investigation is underway to determine the full extent of the fraud, identify additional victims and ascertain if the accused had any accomplices.
