Sundaragada: Panic spread in Gurundia village under the Tamda Range in Sundaragada district after a leopard allegedly entered the residential area and killed a cow, prompting the Forest Department to intensify surveillance in and around the locality.
According to local residents, the carcass of a cow belonging to Augustus Dungdung was found inside his cowshed on Wednesday morning. The animal, which had been tied in the shed, appeared to have been attacked and partially eaten. Villagers suspected that a leopard had entered the village late on Tuesday night and preyed on the livestock.
Acting on the information, Tamda Range Officer Prayag Pradhan, Forest Guard Pratap Sahu and a special squad of the Forest Department visited the spot to assess the situation. During the inspection, officials examined footprints found near the cowshed and said preliminary findings indicated the presence of a leopard in the area.
To track the animal’s movement and prevent any threat to residents, the Forest Department has installed camera traps at strategic locations in the village and nearby areas. Officials said the cameras will be used to monitor the leopard’s activities and determine its movement pattern.
Range Officer Prayag Pradhan said the affected farmer would receive compensation in accordance with the Forest Department’s norms. He also appealed to residents to remain vigilant, avoid venturing out alone after dark and immediately inform forest officials if the leopard is sighted.
The incident has triggered concern among villagers, with forest authorities maintaining close surveillance to ensure public safety and prevent any further attacks on livestock or humans.
