Dhenkanal: Carcass of a female elephant was on Thursday found in the reserve forest near Khairamunda village under Ghagramunda panchayat in the Mahabirod range of Dhenkanal district.

The deceased elephant’s age is estimated to be around 30 years.

While the exact reason behind the pachyderm’s death has not been ascertained yet, it is suspected to have been caused due to illness.

Forest department staff had seen the animal roaming in the forest. On studying its behaviour they suspected it to be sick and arrangements were made for its treatment.

The department had decided to provide it with medical treatment after tranquilizing it today. However, it died before medical treatment.

A joint taskforce is conducting an inquiry into the elephant’s death.
