Bhubaneswar: The district administration in Balasore has been put on high alert due to a potential flood threat in the Basta block as the Jalaka river swelled above the danger mark following continuous rainfall, informed Water Resources Department’s Chief Engineer Chandrashekhar Padhee.
According to Padhee, At Mathani, the Jalka river is flowing at 6.71 metres, surpassing the danger level of 6.50 metres and triggering alarms across low-lying areas.
Regarding the flood situation in other rivers, the water level in the Baitarani River is below the danger mark. In Bhadrak’s Akhuapada, the river is currently flowing at 18.24 meters. The water level is expected to decline further, dropping below the warning level by tomorrow. Padhee said that 15 blocks have recorded heavy rainfall, with Padmapur receiving the highest of 88 mm.
He further said, “The inflow into Hirakud Dam has increased, with 3.36 lakh cusecs of water entering and being released. The water level at Hirakud Dam is currently at 626.58 feet, and 20 gates are being used to release water. The water flow is expected to increase to 4.5-5 lakh cusecs by September 7. The situation is being closely monitored to prevent any adverse effects on the surrounding areas.”
