Bhubaneswar: Two government functionaries including a former inspector of Police and a former Gran Rozgar Sevak were convicted by vigilance court in separate incidents in Ganjam and Phulbani districts in connection with corruption cases.
A special vigilance court in Berhampur sentenced Tapan Kumar Padhy, Ex-Inspector of police (Retired), two years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. Padhy would undergo one month more rigorous imprisonment in default of payment of fine for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(e) PC Act, 1988, the court stated in its order.
He was arrested by the Vigilance in 2006 for possession of disproportionate assets.
The Vigilance will now move the competent authority for the stoppage of pension of Padhy following his conviction.
In another case, Pandaba Mahala, GRS (Disengaged from service) of Ghantapada panchayat under Kantamal Block in Boudh district was awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment in a corruption case.
A special vigilance court in Phulbani also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 and ordered him to undergo further rigorous imprisonment for a period of three months more for the offence U/s 7 P.C. Amendment Act, 2018 in default of payment of fine.
Mahala was arrested by Berhampur Vigilance unit in 2019 for accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a complainant for processing his file for early allotment of a house under Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awaas Yojana (PMAY-G).
