Bhubaneswar: The Transport department enforcement teams in Bhubaneswar have imposed fines on four buses operating on the West Bengal–Odisha route for allegedly charging passengers fares higher than the government-prescribed rates.
The action followed multiple passenger complaints about being forced to pay excessive amounts during their journeys. Acting swiftly, officials from Bhubaneswar RTO-1 and RTO-2 launched a special surprise inspection drive on Thursday.
During the checks, authorities examined ticket prices, collected statements from passengers, and reviewed relevant documents. The verification confirmed that the buses were indeed levying charges above the approved fare structure.
Strict action was taken against the operators under the relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, with fines imposed immediately. Transport officials have issued a strong warning that similar violations will face continued rigorous enforcement. They emphasized zero tolerance for overcharging and other misconduct in the public transport sector.
Passengers are encouraged to promptly report any instances of excessive fares or irregularities to the concerned authorities or RTOs.
