Free Kitchens - Mayurbhanj

Baripada (Mayurbhanj): A day after a powerful tornado swept through several villages in the Karanjia sub-division, the Mayurbhanj administration on Monday opened free kitchens to feed affected residents, providing much-needed relief to those hit by the storm.

Two people, including a woman, were killed and around 40 others sustained injuries when the tornado struck Kia, Kankada, Panposi, Batpalsa, Bala, and Dumuria villages on Sunday afternoon. Nearly 100 houses were damaged, with Dumuria, Batpalsa, and Kia bearing the brunt of the storm.

Additional District Magistrate Netrananda Mallick said the free kitchens had been set up in the three worst-affected villages. “Cooked meals and dry food are being provided to residents. Tarpaulins have also been distributed to help those whose homes were damaged,” he added.

On the day of the disaster, Mayurbhanj Collector Hema Kanta Say and SP Varun Guntupalli visited the affected villages to assess the situation. The Karanjia tehsildar and revenue inspectors are evaluating damage to houses and properties, with nearly 60 per cent of the survey completed. A comprehensive report will be submitted to the administration after assessments in the remaining villages are finalised.
