Bhubaneswar: The 591st coronation day of Gajapati Kapilendra Deva, observed as “Gajapati Divas,” was celebrated at the MKCG Auditorium of Utkal University here on Monday.
The programme was jointly organised by the Odisha Sahitya Akademi and Beyond Heritage Trust.
Odisha’s Language, Literature and Culture Minister Suryabanshi Suraj attended the event as the chief guest and inaugurated a special exhibition titled “War, Emperor and Eternal: Gajapati Kapilendra Deva,” which showcased the life and legacy of the medieval ruler.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister highlighted the valour and contributions of Kapilendra Deva, stating that his reign marked a significant phase in the strengthening of Odia identity, language, and culture.
A short film titled “Lakhe Raja Ra Mauda Mani: The Glorious Story of Gajapati” was also screened during the programme.
Two panel discussions, titled “Revival of Research and Education in the Context of Odisha’s Glorious History” and “From Regional Hero to National Symbol,” were held as part of the commemorative event.
Among those present were Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, Padma Shri awardee Adwaita Gadanayak, History Professor Kuldeep Chand Agnihotri, former Director of the National Manuscript Mission Prof. Prafulla Kumar Mishra, Utkal University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chandi Prasad Nanda, and Odisha Sahitya Akademi Secretary Dr. Chandra Sekhar Hota.
