Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a week of widespread light to moderate rainfall across Odisha, accompanied by a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in several districts. The warning, issued from the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, is in effect starting today, July 11, and extends through July 16.
According to the synoptic situation reported at 2.00 PM, the Monsoon trough is currently active, passing through Sri Ganganagar, Rohtak, Shahjahanpur, Basti, Muzaffarpur, and extending east-southeastwards towards Manipur. This system is driving the current weather pattern across the state.
For the next 24 hours (valid up to 0830 HRS IST of July 12), the IMD has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 30-40 kmph. These conditions are very likely to occur in one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghapur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khurda, and Nayagarh.
Additionally, a Heavy Rainfall warning has been issued for one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj for the same period.
The Yellow Warning extends through the week. For Day 2 (July 12-13) and Day 3 (July 13-14), similar thunderstorm warnings remain in place for a broad swath of districts, including coastal and northern regions.
For Day 5 (July 15-16), the thunderstorm warning is narrowed to Balasore, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj, with heavy rainfall also likely in these districts. No warnings are in place for Days 6 and 7 (July 16-18), though rainfall is expected to continue at many places.
The summary of observations recorded at 8.30 AM today shows that light to moderate rainfall occurred at a few places across Odisha, with heavy rainfall recorded in Khurda and Nayagarh districts. The highest 24-hour rainfall was reported at Balipatna (dist Khurda) with 9 cm, followed by Nayagarh (dist Nayagarh) with 7 cm, and Bissem-Cuttack (dist Rayagada) with 6 cm.
The highest maximum temperature in the plains of Odisha was recorded at Nuapada at 35.0°C, while the lowest minimum temperature was 20.0°C at Boudh.
For Bhubaneswar and its neighborhood, the IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with the possibility of rain or thunderstorms. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 35°C and 27°C, respectively. Bhubaneswar recorded a maximum temperature of 34.2°C and a minimum of 23.4°C this morning, with 1.7 mm of rainfall.
A Farmers Weather Bulletin advises caution for the next 24 hours due to the potential for thunderstorms and heavy rain.
Fishermen along the Odisha coast have also been advised to remain cautious, as weather warnings are in place for the next five days (July 11-15).
