High Humidity Makes Coastal Odisha Feel Much Hotter; Heat Index Reaches 49°C In Baleshwar

Bhubaneswar: High humidity continues to make the weather feel significantly hotter across coastal Odisha, even as actual temperatures remain in the low to mid-30s. The discomfort is being attributed to a weak monsoon flow over the state, according to the weather scientist Uma Shankar Das.

According to weather data provided by Dash for August 3, the heat index has risen sharply due to elevated humidity levels. In Baleshwar, the temperature was recorded at 34.4°C with 72% humidity, pushing the heat index to a scorching 49°C. Puri recorded 33.4°C with 74% humidity (heat index 46°C), while Chandbali registered 33.2°C with 73% humidity (heat index 46°C). In Bhubaneswar, the temperature stood at 33.4°C with 69% humidity, resulting in a heat index of 44°C.

Meteorological experts link the sultry conditions to the monsoon trough remaining north of its normal position. This has led to a weak monsoon current over Odisha, resulting in sticky and oppressive weather, particularly along the coastal belt and adjoining areas.

The IMD has advised people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the outdoors during peak afternoon hours.
