Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has issued a nowcast warning for Puri ahead of the Rath Yatra, predicting moderate rain and thunderstorm activity over the next 6 hours.
According to the weather forecast issued by Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar at 7:00 am today, Puri is likely to witness a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain and thunderstorm till 1:00 pm. The temperature is expected to remain between 25°C to 27°C with humidity ranging from 85% to 95%.
As per the realised weather data till 5:30 am, Puri recorded a temperature of 25.0°C and humidity of 92%. The city also received 71.9 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am and 5:30 am along with rain and thunderstorm.
Given the weather conditions during the festival, the IMD has issued specific advisories for devotees and pilgrims on the Grand Road or Bada Danda. Pilgrims have been advised to remain alert during lightning and thunderstorm activity and to move to a safe, permanent shelter immediately if heavy rain, lightning, or strong winds occur.
The department has cautioned people against taking shelter under trees, electric poles, or temporary structures during thunderstorms. Devotees have also been asked to monitor official weather updates throughout the day as monsoon weather can change rapidly. With humidity expected to remain high despite cloudy conditions, pilgrims are urged to stay hydrated and carry drinking water.
The IMD further advised wearing non-slip footwear and being cautious on wet and slippery roads around Bada Danda. Elderly devotees, children, and people with medical conditions have been asked to avoid prolonged exposure to rain and crowded areas.
