Koraput: The Koraput police on Friday arrested a person moving door-to-door collecting donations impersonating a policeman in Nuasahi, Mohantysahi, and Telisahi areas of Koraput district in Odisha.
The accused has been identified as Bhagwan Nath (41), a resident of Lachmankhedi under Sanwar police limits in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district.
Koraput Town police officer Satyananda Patra, police station officials said that they arrested the accused under Sections 419/420/171 of the IPC suspecting his movements, and will be produced in court tomorrow.
According to reports, Bhagwan Nath, who was dressed in a police uniform, was knocking on the doors of houses in Nuasahi, Mohantyasahi, Telisahi, and other areas asking for donations. Most people gave him money as they were scared of seeing a policeman asking for money.
However, Sumanta Sahu of the Nuasahi area became suspicious of the activities of the accused and asked for his identity card, which the accused could not produce. He spoke in Hindi and said that he was an Indian. Suspecting some mischief, Sahu informed the Koraput Town police about the incident and the residents of Nuasahi detained the man till the police arrived on the scene.
