Koraput: In a major breakthrough, Jeypore Town Police on Monday busted an inter-district robbery racket and arrested two persons involved in a series of thefts and robberies across Koraput and Malkangiri districts. Police also recovered Rs 5 lakh in cash, a motorcycle, and a car from their possession.
The arrested accused have been identified as Shantiraj Nag alias Rahul (19) and Abinash Maharana alias Aakash (28), both residents of Koraput district. The duo was arrested in connection with Jeypore Town PS Case No.166 dated April 15, 2025, registered under Sections 331(4)/305(a)/111(2)/3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). They were produced before court on Monday.
According to police, the investigation began after a complaint was lodged by Radha Mohan Pattnaik of Hanaguda, Jeypore, on April 15. The complainant alleged that miscreants had broken into his neighbour’s house the previous night and decamped with gold and silver ornaments along with Rs 10,000 in cash.
Following the complaint, police apprehended Nag, who confessed to the crime during interrogation and named his associate Abinash. He also revealed that they had sold the stolen gold to a local goldsmith, K. Murali, for Rs 50,000.
During further questioning, the duo disclosed their involvement in a major robbery that took place in Malkangiri district in June this year. Police said efforts are underway to nab other members of the racket and recover more stolen property.
