Baripada: The second day of Chaitra Parba celebrations in Baripada was hit by a nor’wester (Kala Baisakhi), bringing strong winds and heavy rain that caused significant damage to the Chhau dance stage and stalls at the Palishri Mela.
The beautifully decorated stage, arch, and light garlands were destroyed, forcing the district administration to postpone the Chhau dance performance scheduled for the evening.
The Kala Baisakhi, struck at 5 pm, catching the organizers off guard. The strong winds blew away chairs, tables, and light stands, causing extensive damage to the venue. Traders at the Palishri Mela suffered heavy losses as hundreds of stalls were destroyed, shattering the hopes of traders for a brisk business.
“We had worked hard to organize the Chaitra Parba festival, but Kala Baisakhi has destroyed everything. The tents, stage, and stalls have collapsed. We’re trying to repair them. Today’s program may not be performed, but from tomorrow, the program will be held for the next three days,” said Additional District Magistrate Netrananda Mallik.
The Chhau dance, a world-famous tradition, is typically performed under the open sky, with audiences enjoying the spectacle throughout the night.
