Bhubaneswar: Panic spread across the Utkal University campus at Vani Vihar late on Sunday night after miscreants allegedly hurled crude bombs near a hostel.
According to sources, three bombs were thrown near Boys Hostel No. 1, triggering a loud explosion. The blast created fear among the boarders, though no one was injured in the incident. Some students claimed that the sound could have been from firecrackers, but police are yet to confirm the exact cause of the explosion.
On being informed, Bhubaneswar DCP Saravana Vivek M rushed to the campus, interacted with the students and took stock of the situation. He assured that a detailed investigation will be carried out and security will be beefed up on the campus if needed.
The incident comes at a time when tension is running high on the campus ahead of the students’ union elections. As a precautionary measure, two platoons of police force have been deployed inside the university premises.
