Bheden (Bargarh): A 28-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his brother-in-law following a domestic dispute in Chichinda High School pada under Bheden police limits in Bargarh district on Tuesday morning, police said.
The deceased has been identified as Sudip Bag (28), a resident of the locality. The accused, Shukdev Mahanand (50) of nearby Shalana village, reportedly attacked him with a wooden log around 10 AM after an argument broke out between them at home.
According to reports, the altercation escalated suddenly, following which Shukdev allegedly struck Sudip repeatedly with the wooden log. He then dragged the victim and left him in front of the house before fleeing the spot.
The accused’s minor daughter, who was present at the house during the incident, witnessed the assault and alerted local residents. The villagers subsequently informed the police.
A police team, along with a scientific unit, reached the scene and initiated an investigation. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the accused, officials said.
Sources said Shukdev had been residing with his family at his in-laws’ house for the past five years. Sudip, who had earlier divorced his first wife, had been living with his elderly mother. Over the last five years, he had been staying in Shalana village with his maternal grandmother and brother-in-law’s family.
Two years ago, Sudip remarried. However, his second wife reportedly left for her parental home just a week ago. At the time of the incident, he was living with his mother, grandmother, and brother-in-law.
Police are probing the exact cause of the dispute and have registered a case.
Further investigation is in progress.
