Bhubaneswar: A man was allegedly hacked to death with a sharp weapon in the capital city on Saturday, with police suspecting the murder was linked to a dispute over an alleged extramarital affair.
The incident took place at Sri Sai Vihar in the Gadakan area under the jurisdiction of Chandrasekharpur Police Station, triggering tension among local residents.
According to preliminary police findings, the deceased was suspected of having an illicit relationship with the wife of the accused, leading to a long-standing conflict between the two men.
The dispute reportedly escalated on Saturday morning when the accused allegedly attacked the victim with a cleaver. Hearing about the incident, locals rushed to the spot and shifted the injured man to a nearby hospital. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
On receiving information, police reached the scene and initiated an investigation. The accused has been arrested, and the weapon allegedly used in the crime has been seized.
The body has been sent for postmortem examination. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the murder and to determine whether any other person was involved in the crime.
