Bhadrak: The Bhadrak District and Sessions Court on Friday convicted a man for killing a woman in Bhadrak district over previous enmity and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
District and Sessions Judge Lalatendu Jena convicted Madhusudan Das of Khemeswarpur village under Basudevpur police station limits, and awarded him life imprisonment along with a fine of ₹20,000. The court also directed that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional six months of imprisonment.
According to the prosecution, the incident took place on July 22, 2021, when Aarti Das, wife of Narayan Das of Brahmani Gaon in Khemeswarpur village, was returning home from agricultural work. Near a three-road junction in the village, her neighbour Madhusudan Das allegedly attacked her on the head with a spade due to previous enmity.
Aarti sustained critical injuries and collapsed on the spot. After receiving information, her husband Narayan Das rushed to the scene and took her first to Basudevpur Hospital. She was later shifted to Bhadrak district headquarters hospital and subsequently to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
Based on a written complaint lodged by Narayan Das, Basudevpur police registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC and arrested the accused on July 14. He was later forwarded to judicial custody and had remained in jail as an undertrial prisoner.
Public Prosecutor Mina Toppo represented the prosecution during the trial.
