Cuttack: The two women from Mandipanka village under Daringbadi block of Kandhamal district, who are receiving treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, have been diagnosed with hepatitis, resulting in severe multi-organ failure. These two women along with six others fell critically ill after consuming mango kernel last week.

Public Health Director Dr Nilakantha Mishra said on Monday, “Both patients are suffering from hepatitis, possibly due to a fungal infection. They consumed mango kernels that had been stored for over two to three days. We believe this led to fungal contamination.”

Dr Mishra further said, “Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver and in this case it has led to multi-organ failure. Both the liver and kidneys are affected of the two patients.”

According to reports, two women died while six others were hospitalised after consuming mango kernel in Mandipanka village.

Meanwhile, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling has ordered a judicial investigation into the incident. Earlier, the state government attributed the death of two women to food poisoning.

The deceased, identified as Ramita Patamajhi and Runu Majhi from Mandipanka village, died while undergoing treatment at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
