Baripada: In a heartwarming gesture that has brought pride to Mayurbhanj district, Suru Tiria, a humble tribal woman from Basaghutu village in Kusumi block of Rairangpur sub-division, has been invited to attend the prestigious ‘At Home’ reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 15, 2025, as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Suru, who belongs to a modest Santhal tribal family, was overwhelmed with joy upon receiving the invitation from President Droupadi Murmu, who herself hails from the same region. The invitation was personally delivered by Tanmay Kumar Sahu, Inspector of Rairangpur Postal Division, along with BPM Abinash Hembram and ABPM Anand Raidas of the Kathabharia Branch Post Office.
Living a simple life, Suru supports her family by engaging in farming and rearing goats and cows. Unmarried, she resides with her brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and grandchildren, contributing to the household through her daily labour.
“I never imagined that I would ever step into Rashtrapati Bhavan, let alone be invited for such an important national celebration,” said an emotional Suru, expressing her deep gratitude and happiness.
Her selection for the event symbolizes a celebration of grassroots India and the recognition of ordinary citizens who embody the spirit of resilience and simplicity.
