Puri: A major accident was averted near Puri railway station on Friday after a MEMU passenger train travelling from Talcher to Puri derailed while approaching the station.
The incident occurred near Platform No. 3, around 500 metres from Puri station, when the train suddenly derailed while entering the station. As the train was moving at a slow speed, no major damage was reported. There were also no immediate reports of injuries or casualties.
Hundreds of passengers had a narrow escape. After the train came to a halt, passengers got down, collected their belongings and walked towards the station.
Railway staff and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel promptly reached the spot and took control of the situation. Efforts were initiated to clear the derailed train and restore normal movement.
The incident caused a brief disruption in train operations, though other trains were reportedly not affected.
Railway authorities said the exact cause of the derailment would be ascertained after a detailed investigation.
