Bhubaneswar: A 16-year-old boy died after being struck by lightning in Darengaba village under Nandapur block in Koraput district on Wednesday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Bhagirathi Shisha, son of Jagannath Shisha of Darengaba village.
According to reports, strong winds accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning hit the Nandapur area on Wednesday evening. At the time, Bhagirathi was reportedly charging his mobile phone and listening to something with earphones plugged in. It was during this time that lightning struck. The boy collapsed unconscious on the spot.
Family members immediately rushed him to the Nandapur Community Health Centre in an ambulance. However, by the time he reached the hospital it was too late. Doctors declared Bhagirathi dead on arrival.
Following the tragic news, a pall of gloom descended on the family. Upon learning the news, relatives and villagers gathered at the hospital. The entire medical facility was filled with grief.
