Bhubaneswar: The lineage of marmoset monkeys at Nandankanan Zoological Park has been wiped out after two of the rare primates died after being bitten by a poisonous snake.
According to reports, the incident occurred in enclosure 59(F) of the zoo’s ‘Monkey World’ section, which houses several exotic monkey species. Between 5 am and 6 am, a poisonous snake reportedly entered the enclosure and bit two marmosets within the span of an hour. Both animals succumbed shortly afterwards.
Meanwhile, animal lovers have strongly criticised the zoo authorities, alleging that the tragedy occurred due to sheer negligence by departmental officials. They pointed out that the enclosure had been specially designed to suit the monkeys and prevent any outside animal from entering. Despite these measures, questions are being raised over how a snake managed to slip in through the wire mesh.
