Bhubaneswar: Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik offered humble tributes to the martyrs of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, remembering their supreme sacrifice during the tragic event of 1919.
In his X handle, Patnaik stated that the martyrs’ sacrifice marked a decisive turning point in India’s struggle for freedom and awakened the nation’s conscience.
“Their supreme sacrifice marked a decisive turning point in India’s struggle for freedom, awakening the nation’s conscience,” Patnaik wrote.
He called upon people to honour the memory of the martyrs by dedicating themselves to nation-building. “On this solemn day, let us honour their memory by dedicating our lives to nation-building,” he added.
It is pertinent to mention that the Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place on April 13, 1919, in Amritsar when British troops opened indiscriminate fire on a peaceful gathering of innocent men, women and children who had assembled to celebrate Baisakhi and protest against the repressive Rowlatt Act. The brutal incident is widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters of British colonial rule in India and became a major catalyst in strengthening the national freedom movement under leaders like Mahatma Gandhi.
