Bhubaneswar: In a major development for the Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line Project, engine testing and safety checks on the newly constructed 16.27-kilometer section between Jharmunda and Boudh stations have been successfully completed, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) confirmed on Thursday.

This milestone marks significant progress in a long-anticipated rail project that promises to greatly enhance connectivity in Odisha’s remote regions, as stated by East Coast Railway (ECoR) in a press release.

Construction is also advancing on other sections, including the 13.701-kilometer stretch from Boudh to Champapur and the 13.437-kilometer stretch from Champapur to Purunakatak, with work proceeding from both ends to expedite completion. The project spans a total of 301 kilometers, with 199 kilometers already operational. This includes 106 kilometers from Khurda Road to Daspalla and 93 kilometers from Balangir to Boudh. Additionally, the 27-kilometer section from Boudh to Purunakatak is nearing completion, further driving progress toward the project’s ambitious timeline.

The final 75-kilometer stretch from Purunakatak to Daspalla involves complex engineering work, including tunnel construction through challenging jungle and sanctuary terrain. Despite these obstacles, construction is advancing steadily with the goal of completing this crucial link soon.

The Khurda Road-Balangir Rail Line holds immense potential for boosting economic development and facilitating transportation in previously inaccessible areas. The Ministry of Railways is closely monitoring progress to ensure the project’s timely completion, reflecting Indian Railways’ commitment to overcoming even the toughest engineering challenges. Successful tunnel construction will mark a notable achievement for Indian Railways, showcasing its dedication to delivering essential infrastructure in remote regions.

Following CRS’s safety inspection, the Jharmunda-Boudh section has been approved for train operations, though services will officially commence once remaining infrastructure and passenger amenities are completed. A light engine trial run has already been conducted, further underscoring the progress toward enhanced connectivity in the region.

This milestone brings Odisha’s remote areas closer to greater economic opportunities and improved access, as the region anticipates the full benefits of this transformative rail link.
