Bhubaneswar: A nine-day-old girl, who was allegedly sold by her parents for Rs 20,000 in Rayagada district, was recovered from Andhra Pradesh today.
As per reports, the baby was born on November 3, and just nine days later, the parents allegedly handed her over to a couple. Following the intervention of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), the baby was rescued from Andhra Pradesh today.
Forced by abject poverty, Rahul Dhanabadi and his wife Kumud Ganta of Nuapada slum under Chandili police station limits sold their newborn daughter to a childless couple from Pedapenki village in Andhra Pradesh’s Manyam district, said sources.
After the matter came to the fore, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department launched an investigation into the matter.
Meanwhile, the State Commission For Protection Of Child Rights refuted the ‘child sale’ allegations stating that the couple had handed over the newborn for adoption.
Rights Commission member Satyapriya Pradhan said “After learning about the incident, we visited the child’s home for investigation. The child was just nine days old when the parents handed her over. They didn’t sell the child, but due to poverty, they couldn’t afford to raise her and gave her to someone else.”
