Berhampur: The National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) University in Odisha’s Berhampur received recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC). In a letter dated December 19, 2024, the UGC confirmed NIST University’s inclusion in its 2F list, granting it full autonomy to operate as a recognised university under UGC norms.
Originally established as an autonomous college, the NIST was granted university status in 2024 through the NIST University Act, enacted by the state government. This recognition enables the institution to exercise full academic independence while adhering to UGC guidelines and regulations.
The university’s Vice Chancellor, Priyadaran Patra, highlighted that the institution’s prior NAAC A-grade accreditation has set the stage for re-accreditation under the university category. Additionally, Dean Rajesh Kumar Panakala confirmed that all courses have secured the necessary AICTE approvals.
Since its inception in 1996, NIST has graduated over 20,000 students from India and neighbouring countries.
The UGC recognition is expected to solidify NIST’s position as a premier research-oriented institution and bolster its reputation in education and innovation.
