Baripada: In a significant move to strengthen law and order, Mayurbhanj police have invoked the National Security Act (NSA), 1980, against two habitual offenders accused of involvement in a series of serious crimes, including theft, dacoity, robbery and snatching.
The accused, identified as brothers Akash Mukhi (26) and Kundan Mukhi (24) of Kalikapur under Baripada Town Police Station limits, have been booked under the stringent preventive detention law due to their repeated involvement in criminal activities.
According to police, Akash Mukhi has as many as 49 criminal cases registered against him, while Kundan Mukhi is facing 14 criminal cases. The offences allegedly committed by the duo include theft, dacoity, robbery, snatching and other related crimes.
Both accused are currently lodged in judicial custody at Baripada Circle Jail.
Police officials said the NSA has been invoked as part of efforts to curb the activities of habitual offenders and maintain public order in the district. The Act provides for preventive detention of individuals whose actions are considered prejudicial to the maintenance of public order and security.
Authorities further stated that stringent legal action would continue against anti-social elements to ensure peace, safety and security across Mayurbhanj district.
The action is being viewed as a strong message from law enforcement agencies against repeat offenders and criminal activities in the region.
