Bhubaneswar: Odisha is bracing for a wet and stormy weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning in several districts on August 24 and August 25.
According to the IMD’s latest forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) will lash one or two places over the districts of Sambalpur, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar on August 24. The weather office has issued orange warnings to these districts.
For August 25, IMD issued orange warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall (7 to 20cm) and thunderstorm with lightning to the districts of Sambalpur, Dhenkanal, Angul, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Keonjhar.
As per IMD prediction, heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorm with lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Bargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Cuttack, Sonepur, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bolangir and Nuapada on August 24.
That apart, one or two places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Khurda, Puri, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Nuapada, Bargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput and Nabarangapur are likely to experience heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorm with lightning on August 25. These districts have been issued yellow warnings.
“Heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorm with lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh and Keonjhar”, read the IMD’s prediction for August 26.
IMD forecasted heavy rainfall (7 to 11cm) and thunderstorm with lightning very likely at one or two places over the districts of Sundargarh, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj on August 27.
In view of the weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has issued an advisory to all Collectors.
According to the advisory, districts under ‘Orange’ and ‘Yellow’ warning to keep administrative machinery ready to face any eventuality.
In urban areas, low-lying areas may have water logging and roads/drains may be submerged under water.
Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) have been asked to keep the drains/stormwater channels de-congested and adequate de-watering pumps may be deployed as per requirement.
The Collectors have been asked to immediately report heavy to very heavy rainfall to the SRC’s office.
Besides, advice for fishermen has to be strictly implemented.
In the event of damage occurred due to heavy rainfall a report has to be submitted to the SRC’s office.
