Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep condolences over the passing of former Minister and veteran BJP leader Samir Dey.

The Chief Minister described Samir Dey as a popular leader and strong organizer who made significant contributions to the state’s development, particularly in higher education and urban development.

Dey’s amiable personality made him a favourite among people from all walks of life. As Higher Education and Urban Development Minister, he played a crucial role in strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party in Cuttack and across Odisha.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has announced that Dey’s last rites will be performed with full state honours. He also conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, praying for the departed soul’s peace and the family’s strength to bear the loss.

Notably, during his visits to Cuttack, the Chief Minister would often visit Dey, who was ailing at the time. During his recent trip to Cuttack for the inauguration of Bali Jatra festival, the Chief Minister visited Dey at a private hospital and took stock of the situation.

As his death news spread, condolence messages poured in from politicians cutting across the party lines.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Naveen Patnaik expressed his heartfelt condolence over the demise of Dey. Patnaik took to his X handle and wrote: “ I am saddened to learn about the demise of eminent politician and former minister Sameer Dey. His work for the betterment of the people over the years will always be remembered. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to the bereaved family members. Omm Shanti.”

Also, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan expressed grief over Dey’s death. He wrote: “I am deeply saddened and distressed to hear about the passing of Odisha’s former Minister and our party’s senior leader, Samir Dey. He was a kind-hearted and philanthropic person who made significant contributions to the state’s development, particularly in higher education and urban development.”

“As a popular leader, he played a crucial role in strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party’s organization in Cuttack and across Odisha. His amiable personality made him a favourite among people from all walks of life. Dey’s efforts in promoting the party’s nationalist ideology in coastal Odisha, particularly in Cuttack, were instrumental in the party’s initial progress. As a public representative, he undertook numerous developmental works that will always be remembered. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and pray for the departed soul’s peace and the family’s strength to bear the loss. With his death, Odisha lost a skilled and affectionate leader. May his soul rest in peace”, read Pradhan’s tweet.
