Bhubaneswar: A government doctor posted at a Primary Health Centre in Ganjam district has been arrested on charges of cheating, financial fraud, sexual exploitation and blackmailing a woman after allegedly luring her into a relationship with a false promise of marriage.
The accused, identified as Dr. Abinash Mohanty, was working at the Dengaosta Primary Health Centre under Sanakhemundi block in Ganjam district. He was arrested from Umerkote on Monday following a complaint lodged by the woman at the Airfield Police Station in Bhubaneswar.
According to the complaint, the doctor befriended the woman through social media and gradually developed a relationship with her by assuring her that he would marry her. The woman alleged that during the course of their relationship, Mohanty established physical relations with her and later secretly captured obscene photographs and videos when she was unconscious.
Police said the accused allegedly used the intimate content to blackmail the woman after their relationship deteriorated.
The complainant further alleged that she spent more than ₹25 lakh on Mohanty during their relationship. Of this amount, nearly ₹15 lakh was reportedly spent on a trip to Dubai, where the doctor allegedly celebrated his birthday on a cruise. The woman also claimed that she had provided him with gold ornaments, including a chain, locket, ring and bracelet, along with an iPhone.
According to the allegations, the woman regularly sent groceries and other necessities to the doctor at his workplace in Sanakhemundi. However, she later learned that Mohanty had fixed his marriage with another woman and was distancing himself from her.
When she sought the return of her money and valuables, the accused allegedly threatened to make the obscene photographs and videos public, the complaint stated.
Following an investigation based on the woman’s allegations, Airfield Police arrested the doctor and initiated further legal proceedings. Further investigation is underway.
