Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has issued a stern warning to liquor vendors against overcharging customers. Excise Minister Prithviraj Harichandan on Friday stated that retail liquor dealers are prohibited from selling alcohol above the maximum retail price (MRP). Strict action will be taken against those found violating this rule.
“Instances of liquor being sold at higher prices have been reported in some areas of the state. Retailers have no right to charge more than the MRP. If liquor shops are caught engaging in overcharging, the owners will face stringent penalties,” the Minister emphasized.
The Minister cited a recent incident in Ganjam district where one or two cases of overcharging were reported. Swift action was taken in response, setting a precedent for future enforcement. Harichandan assured that any similar violations reported in the coming days would be dealt with firmly to protect consumer rights.
The state government’s proactive approach aims to curb illegal pricing practices and ensure fair trade in the retail liquor market.
