Bhubaneswar: Odisha is looking to draw on Gujarat’s experience in developing a semiconductor ecosystem as the state steps up efforts to position itself as a major hub for India’s emerging chip industry, Electronics & Information Technology Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling said during a visit to semiconductor facilities in Sanand on Tuesday.
Mahaling, who also holds the Health & Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs portfolios, visited the CG Semiconductor Facility in Sanand and reviewed its operations and various systems. He held detailed discussions with the company’s leadership and technical experts on the requirements for developing a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem.
The discussions covered a range of issues, including ancillary industries, human resources, supply chain management, skill development and coordination between industry and government.
Officials said the visit was aimed at understanding the ecosystem taking shape in Sanand and exploring how its experience and learnings could be adapted to Odisha’s requirements.
The state government is keen to develop a strong, sustainable and self-reliant semiconductor ecosystem that can attract investments, generate employment and create opportunities for skill development in the high-technology sector.
Mahaling said the State Government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, is committed to promoting high-technology and future-oriented industries in Odisha.
He said developing a robust semiconductor ecosystem would open up new opportunities for investment, employment and skill development and help Odisha emerge as a competitive destination for the semiconductor industry.
As part of the visit, Mahaling also visited Kaynes Semicon and toured its chip packaging operations, including testing, dicing, laser marking, plating and packaging.
He subsequently visited Micron Semiconductor, where he discussed the broader semiconductor ecosystem and the scope for developing a similar network of industries and supporting infrastructure in Odisha.
The government’s focus is not limited to semiconductor manufacturing but also includes building supporting industries, developing skilled manpower and strengthening supply-chain capabilities, officials said.
The visit is expected to provide the state with insights into the infrastructure, industrial linkages and workforce requirements needed to establish a sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in Odisha.
Additional Chief Secretary of the Electronics & IT Department Vishal Kumar Dev, OPTCL Chairman Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma, Odisha Computer Application Centre (OCAC) CEO Dr Pradeep Kumar Raut, Executive Director Kaustuva Dipta Pany and other senior officials accompanied the Minister during the visit.
